A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
