Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
