The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after failing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed social media posts about the conservative activist.

The motion against the student leader achieved the necessary super-majority to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.

Disputed Comments

The controversy began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on online platforms that seemed to welcome the death of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in Utah.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also reported to have written in a messaging group with fellow students seeming to welcome the incident.

Election Results

The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with results revealed on Tuesday.

Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were against the motion.

The notice stated that the future president was deemed to have stepped down in following the society's regulations.

Procedural Disputes

Voting operations were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.

In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been stopped because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His statement unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The student maintained that significant concerns had been submitted to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.

His comment added that George was "proud and thankful to have the support of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who voted to have a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have said that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Reactions

On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.

The message criticized the union of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".

The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".

The Oxford Union had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and stated that concerns submitted about him had been referred for official review.

The president-elect had been one of multiple members to discuss with the activist at the union in spring.
