UK Expands Methanol Toxicity Alert List with An additional 11 Nations
British authorities has placed eleven new nations to its official warning roster about the threats of industrial alcohol contamination from contaminated beverages.
This revised travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a global increase in the number of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol contamination.
Just a few weeks ago, the government had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, in response to multiple notable incidents like the fatal demise of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being cautions that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or death within 12 to 48 hours.
Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?
Toxic alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol commonly utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not meant for ingestion.
While it is inherently formed during the production of spirits, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the refining procedure.
But in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and because it is flavorless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to detect.
Government Guidance for Tourists
Authorities official Hamish Falconer emphasized that each tourist should know the signs of industrial alcohol toxicity.
"When you are having drinks abroad, opt for well-known venues and refrain from homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," Falconer advised.
"If something appears suspicious, like a headache that's way worse than usual or sight issues – get medical help right away."
The complete list of nations noted as posing a risk of industrial alcohol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
